FATF Recommendations, Recommendation 15 and Interpretive Note
October 16, 2026
Recommendation 15 of the Financial Action Task Force covers new technologies. Since 2019 it, and its interpretive note, require countries to assess the risks of virtual assets, license or register VASPs and supervise them for anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing.
FATF reviews how countries apply it in regular targeted updates. Implementation varies widely, which is why a VASP's regulatory status has to be checked country by country.
