Before MiCA, most EU countries registered crypto firms for anti-money laundering purposes under national law. These registrations, often called legacy registrations, stopped allowing firms to operate once each country's transitional period ended.
Before 31 December 2024, Poland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Estonia and Bulgaria held 3,659 registrations between them. By 13 October 2026, the same five countries had authorised 26 CASPs. The comparison counts register entries, so it is not a rate for individual firms, and many registrations belonged to the same groups.
