FATF Recommendation 16; Regulation (EU) 2023/1113

The Travel Rule comes from FATF Recommendation 16, which requires originator and beneficiary information to travel with a payment. FATF applied it to virtual asset transfers, so a VASP sending crypto for a customer must pass the sender's and recipient's details to the receiving VASP.
In the EU, the Transfer of Funds Regulation has applied the rule to crypto-asset transfers since 30 December 2024, with no minimum amount for transfers between providers.
Before customer data goes to another provider, the sending firm needs to know which legal entity will receive it and whether that entity is regulated. That counterparty check is where VASPnet's data is used.
