How regulated are the world’s top crypto spot exchanges?

The second edition of VASPnet's assessment of the regulatory status of the world’s top centralised crypto spot exchanges (CEXs).

Introduction

VASPnet’s regulatory reference data product, VASPdata, streamlines and standardises data on virtual asset service providers (VASPs) from 95 regulators and public authorities in 75 different countries.[1]

To evaluate the current risk of unregulated service providers in the digital asset sector, VASPnet assessed the regulatory status of the world’s 100 top centralised crypto spot exchanges (CEXs). For the second edition of this report, VASPnet referenced CoinMarketCap’s list of top spot CEXs from 25 October 2024.

The report covers:

  • the density of top CEXs by region,
  • the most popular countries for top CEXs worldwide and in the EU,
  • how many are not under regulatory supervision,
  • how many are subject to anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) requirements vs. wider consumer protection, market conduct or prudential requirements,
  • how many are currently registered or licensed in an EU jurisdiction,
  • a snapshot of the daily transaction volume of unregulated CEXs, and more.
